Champaign man arrested on multiple firearm charges

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) -- The Champaign County Sheriff's Office arrested a man on multiple firearms charges Monday afternoon.

Around 1:40 p.m. a deputy attempted a traffic stop for a "violation of the Illinois Vehicle Code" in the area of Dodson Drive and Illinois Street. The driver attempted to evade the deputy, but the vehicle hit a curb and was stopped after attempting a U-turn in the roadway.

The driver, 33-year-old Dequan Clark from Champaign, exited the car with a firearm in hand and began to run away.

According to the Champaign County Sheriff's Office, the deputy called for Clark to drop the weapon multiple times. Eventually, he dropped it in a bush and continued running.

Clark was eventually taken into custody without incident. Deputies recovered a 9mm handgun with a defaced serial number and extended magazine.

He was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a defaced firearm, resisting a peace officer, no valid driver's license and multiple traffic offenses and taken to the Champaign County Jail.

The Champaign County Sheriff's Office asks that anyone with information to call the Investigations Division at 217-384-1213. To make a tip anonymously, call Champaign County Crime Stoppers at 217-373-TIPS (8477), visit their website, or submit at web on the P3 Tips mobile app.
