Bristol Herald Courier

The softball team at the University of Virginia's College at Wise posted two victories on Friday and the winning pitcher in each game was from far Southwest Virginia.

Alivia Nolley (Lebanon) went the distance in a 4-3 victory over Lock Haven of Pennsylvania, which ended when Lindsay Polan from Blacksburg, Virginia, hit a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Bayleigh Allison (Wise County Central) got the win in relief in the second game, a 7-6 triumph over North Greenville.

Kaylynn Baker (3-for-4) and Adyson Gibson (2-for-3, two runs) - both from Gate City - led UVa-Wise at the plate, while Taylor Clay (Eastside) had a hit and RBI for the Highland Cavaliers.

The Cavs are 3-4.

King 10-8, Mars Hill 8-0

Tori Ryan (Tennessee High) and Shaina Addair (Patrick Henry) contributed to King University's hit parade as the Tornado swept a doubleheader from Mars Hill.

Ryan and Addair each went 3-for-4 in a 10-8 win in the opener with Addair hitting her first collegiate home run.

Ryan hit one of King's three homers in the nightcap.

The Tornado are 4-4.

Emory & Henry 5, Emmanuel 0

Emory & Henry 9, North Georgia 0

Emory & Henry won a pair of games at a tournament in Georgia to improve to 6-3.

Abigail Street (Patrick Henry) pounded out two hits and Malorie Reeves pitched a two-hit shutout in the opening win over Emmanuel.

Mackenzie Williams tallied three RBIs and Destiny Good pitched an eight-hit shutout against nationally-ranked North Georgia in the second contest.

BASEBALL

King 9-2, Barton 7-5

Joe Amunategui III doubled, homered and drove in three runs as King University bopped Barton 9-7 in the first game of a Conference Carolinas doubleheader on Friday.

The Tornado (3-6, 1-1) managed just four hits in a 5-2 loss in the nightcap. Corbin Dickenson (Sullivan East) went the distance on the mound, striking out seven.

Patrick & Henry 11-3, SWCC 6-0

Freshman Noah Sills (John Battle) pitched two scoreless innings to polish off Patrick & Henry's 11-6 win over Southwest Virginia Community College in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday.

Sills yielded two hits and walked one, that one walk being former high school teammate John Paul Eads.

Ben Kilbourne (Chilhowie) had two hits -- including a triple -- in the first game for SWCC but the Flying Eagles (0-10) did not have a hit at all in the nightcap and struck out 15 times against Dylan Grabowski in a 3-0 setback.

Carson-Newman 7-6, Emory & Henry 0-1

Emory & Henry generated little offense in dropping a South Atlantic Conference twinbill to Carson-Newman.

The Wasps managed just one hit in the opener against the C-N duo of Ryan Higgins and Jackson Underwood and that was a single by Jaret Hoppes to begin the top of the ninth inning.

E&H (1-7, 0-2) had just three hits in the nightcap and Jacob Bebber scored the team's only run.

Tennessee High graduate Evan Mutter walked as a pinch-hitter in his only plate appearance for Carson-Newman (9-0, 2-0) in the second game.

UVa-Wise 0-2, Wingate 7-1

Houston Sarvis, Bo Trantham and Ryan Whitson combined to pitch a four-hitter for the University of Virginia's College at Wise as they beat Wingate in the second game of a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader.

UVa-Wise (10-2, 1-1) managed just three hits but one of those was a two-run single by Matt Frye in the sixth inning that put the Highland Cavaliers ahead to stay.

The Cavs had just three hits in the first game as well, getting blanked by Wingate hurlers Carson Morton and Thomas Goldberg.

Wright State 12-14, Longwood 1-8

Longwood and Horizon League preseason favorite Wright State opened their seasons by playing a doubleheader at Burchell Stallard Stadium on the campus of the University of Virginia's College at Wise on Friday.

The series was originally set for Farmville, Virginia, but when snow blanketed that region the teams arranged to play in Southwest Virginia.

Boston Smith homered to highlight Wright State's 12-1 win in the opener, while J.P. Peltier, Will Cook and Luke Arnold all went yard for the Raiders in a 14-8 win in the nightcap.

The two teams play again today in Wise at 1 p.m.
