This New Indie Is Perfect for Fans of Unpacking

Unpacking is one of the cutest and most satisfying indies to come out in a while, but nothing has compared since. A Little to the Left came close with its small-scale organizing tasks, yet Unpacking's almost Sims-like total-house gameplay had yet to be matched in a real way. That is, until now: players can finally satisfy their whole-house organization itch with the release of Whisper of the House, which can be picked up on Steam for only $15.

As a professional home unpacker and decorator, it's the player's job to take requests from the residents of Whisper Town to unpack, clean up, and organize their homes. This might include helping the town's baker get ready for opening day, or helping the new punk music store get their stock on the shelves, but no matter what task the player needs to complete, it can be done to their own liking. Nothing can be thrown away, but each room of each job can be organized in whatever way makes the most sense, unlike in Unpacking, where most of the objects in the home had a particular room or place in which they belonged.

Not only will players need to see each of their neighbors' homes set to rights, they're also responsible for the general neatness of the town. The game's Steam page describes the player's role in Whisper Town as "the town's all-around housekeeper," making them responsible for cleaning up trash, fixing fire hydrants, and even investigating the mysterious, glitching objects around town in hopes of discovering just what's causing the strange energy surrounding them.

Whisper Town is an idyllic seaside destination, but it's also a town that's full of intrigue and supernatural mystery. Investigate the monolithic pyramid with the glowing number 42 at the center of the town and rescue the local alchemist from another dimension, all in time for bed and more work the next day. Paying careful attention might even lead to hidden rooms and magical secrets lurking behind the town's closed doors.

A keepsake hidden in a corner, a dusty journal up on a shelf, and an old photo pinned to a corkboard -- these clues and more will reveal the truths about Whisper Town's residents to the player. It's in the small things that players will learn more about the people around them, and its these small things that will make the most difference in their lives. Place each item in its "perfect" place, keeping an eye out for hidden details along the way.

Whisper of the House's secrets aren't just well-hidden, they're clever. Many stare the player right in the face, puzzles that are completely solvable with the information given as long as the player has been paying attention. Reading everything is rewarded, and puzzle-lovers will be incredibly satisfied when the truth is revealed and their puzzle is solved. None of these puzzles are necessary to complete the game's main mechanic, but they add a ton of flavor and flair to this already incredibly unique game.

The more players uncover, the more they'll learn about their eccentric neighbors and their new home, and maybe even unlock some surprises along the way. As a humble housekeeper, players will jump into the charming and sometimes spooky world of Whisper Town to do what they do best: help folks get their spaces in order. On top of organizing and unpacking the homes of the townspeople, players will also get their own space to decorate, create, and make their own.

To begin, players start with a small number of personal effects that can be used to outfit their small apartment, but they can use the vouchers they earn from completing jobs to quickly gather more. Purchase all sorts of furniture, appliances, decorations, and more to create the perfect living space, and even upgrade to a larger one when the starter space fills up. With over 1,800 different items in the game, the possibilities are practically endless.

Though the player is new to Whisper Town, they'll soon become an integral part of it. Whether they decide to uncover all the mysteries the town has to solve or focus on the main unpacking and organizing tasks, they'll be satisfied. For players who miss Unpacking's cozy and cute pixel art style and story told through the items in someone's house, Whisper of the House will fill that craving and then some.
