'It's about who you know in this game' - Ronan Whelan in dreamland as Precise call-up proves a winning one in Moyglare

An 11th Moyglare Stud Stakes for Aidan O'Brien. Nothing unusual about that. A one-two for the all-conquering Ballydoyle team. Nothing unusual about that either. What was unusual was the pecking order as even-money favourite Composing could finish only fourth as lesser-fancied stablemate Precise led home Beautify by three-quarters of a length.

Karl Burke is enjoying a brilliant spell but Venetian Sun losing her unbeaten record was a rare blip for the Spigot Lodge supremo.

She did not run badly back in third but, for the first time in her career, she had no answers when the Ballydoyle team kicked on passing the two-furlong pole.

It was Ronan Whelan who made the most of a golden opportunity for Ballydoyle, picking precisely the right time to show his hand on Precise. He had all the aces.

"It's not about what you know in this game, it's about who you know and I was delighted to get the call to ride for Ballydoyle in this," said Whelan, widely recognised as the ultimate gentleman of the Irish weighing room.

"This has been a lucky race for me and, to be fair to her, she quickened up well and I was value for a bit more at the line. With these good fillies, she had to show a turn of foot over seven furlongs, but the way she hit the line she could be better over further. When those good fillies have it, they have it - no matter what the trip."

Whelan was probably riding Precise in the Curragh Group 1 only because Wayne Lordan was suspended after picking up a ban aboard the same filly when she won a Group 3 at Goodwood last month.

She has taken a giant leap forward since that Group 3 Prestige Stakes triumph and the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar could be next on the agenda.

O'Brien said: "Precise is an improving filly. She had a lovely run last time and came forward a lot from it. She won very nicely at Cork and then Wayne won on her at Goodwood. She's a lovely filly. She's homegrown. She's out of a very good Galileo mare with a very good pedigree, and she's by Starspangledbanner.

"There was a strong headwind and Ronan had her in a lovely position; he gave her a lovely ride.

"That was a 'win and you're in' for the Breeders' Cup and she'd love that fast ground out there, she's a slick mover. Now she's a Group 1 winner, we can go gentle with her."

The trainer also urged us not to be too hard on Composing, despite her rather tame finishing effort.

"It was probably tough out there for Composing making the running" he said. "Maybe we should have put another filly in there to make the running for her. It wasn't fair to ask her to make the running in that headwind, and I can't be disappointed with her or Beautify."

Neither could contain Precise, who was made the new 10-1 favourite by BoyleSports for next year's Betfred 1,000 Guineas.
