THE TROPICS: Tropical Storm Jerry forms in the Atlantic, expected to become hurricane

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - A system forecast to develop into at least a tropical depression Tuesday has officially formed into the season's next tropical storm.

As of Tuesday at 11 a.m., Tropical Storm Jerry has formed about 1315 miles east-southeast of the northern Leeward Islands.

Live 5 First Alert Meteorologist Joey Sovine said the latest forecast models show the system curving away from the United States, following the same general trajectory as Hurricanes Humberto and Imelda.

The center of Jerry is approximately located at latitude 11.5 north, longitude 44.6 west. It is moving toward the west at about 24 mph, but the forecast track shows a decrease in forward speed and a subsequent turn toward the west-northwest over the next couple days.

This system is expected to be close to or north of the northern Leeward Islands on Thursday and Friday.

Jerry's maximum sustained winds were at 45 mph with higher gusts. The storm is forecast to grow stronger and become a hurricane in a day or two.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles from Jerry's center.

The estimated minimum central pressure of the storm is 1006 mb or 29.71 inches.

An area of low pressure over the Yucatan Peninsula is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms.

The system will emerge over the Bay of Campeche some time Tuesday. Slow development is possible ahead of it moving inland over southern Mexico either late Wednesday or early Thursday.

Regardless of development, heavy rain and gusty winds are likely to affect portions of the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize and southern Mexico during the next couple of days.

The system has a 10% chance of developing in the next 48 hours and also the next seven days.

After Jerry, the next names on the 2025 Tropical Cyclone Names list for the Atlantic are Karen, Lorenzo and Melissa.
