If you've ever applied patches and updates and clicked "update and shutdown" on your Windows computer only to see the device still running the next day, that's because the device went into "update and restart" mode instead.

Affecting both Windows 10 and 11, the problem can drain batteries for some devices like laptops since the PC continued to run rather than shut down.
Many believe the bug has been around for almost a decade, according to reports.

The new Windows update will finally let users shut down their PC when they explicitly choose "update and shutdown."
The fix comes on the heels of Microsoft ceasing customer support for its Windows 10 operating system last month. Computers using Windows 10 will continue to operate, but there will be no assistance from Microsoft available to users.

Users can upgrade to Windows 11 for free, but only computers that "meet the minimum hardware specifications" will be able to upgrade.

Along with the bug fix, Windows is changing the way updates for PCs are named by removing "unnecessary technical elements" that are often seen as a string of numbers and letters.
Now, the simplified Windows updates title system will have easy-to-understand words, like "Logitech driver update" instead of the previous technical title versions.
Along with these, the updates will include changes to some AI components of the PC.

To get the latest updates, which include the fix for the "update and shutdown" bug. Users can do the following.
Select Start (Windows icon at the bottom left)Select SettingsClick Update & Security then Windows UpdateSelect Check for Windows updatesIf there are any available updates for your device, you can select Download & InstallWhen prompted, you will need to restart your system to apply the updatesTwo options for automatic Windows updates
To get automatic Windows updates, you can turn on "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available."
But if you do not want to be disrupted when an update is available and you are using the PC, you can set specific hours when you're not using the PC and it can download updates. Here's how.
