Egypt to Witness Total Lunar Eclipse Tonight | Sada Elbalad

Skywatchers in Egypt will be treated to a spectacular astronomical event on Sunday, September 7, as a total lunar eclipse will be visible across the country.

The timing of the eclipse coincides with the full moon of Rabiʿ al-Awwal 1447 AH, when the Earth's shadow will completely cover the lunar disk at maximum eclipse, with a magnitude of 136.2%.

This means Earth's umbra will extend well beyond the moon's size, fully immersing it in darkness.

According to astronomers, the eclipse will last a total of 5 hours and 27 minutes from start to finish.

The partial phases alone will span 3 hours and 29 minutes, while the total eclipse, when the moon is entirely within Earth's shadow, will last about 1 hour and 22 minutes.

Dr. Taha Rabah, head of the National Institute of Astronomy, explained that observing a lunar eclipse poses no risk to the eyes, unlike solar eclipses which require protective glasses.

He added that lunar eclipses are scientifically useful for confirming the beginnings of lunar months in the Islamic calendar, as they occur only at full moon when the Earth is precisely aligned between the sun and the moon.

During the event, the moon will pass through Earth's long shadow, causing it to appear darkened and sometimes tinted red, creating a striking celestial display visible to the naked eye.
