Jimmy Kimmel says 'MAGA gang' trying to distance itself from Kirk's alleged killer

HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) -- Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel said Monday members of the "MAGA" movement are trying to distance themselves from Tyler Robinson, who is charged with murdering conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

"We hit some new lows over the weekend, with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and everything they can to score political points from it," Kimmel claimed.

Some Republicans have asserted Robinson is liberal and killed Kirk for his beliefs, although investigators have not yet announced a motive for the shooting. Robinson is also only accused of murdering the activist, but authorities found a rifle they believe the suspect used to kill Kirk near bullet casings with antifascist inscriptions.

Vice President JD Vance suggested Monday that some "institutions" contributed to Kirk's killing by promoting terrorism and violence. Many Republican lawmakers have also accused members of "the left" of playing a part in the activist's death. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., wrote in a post on social media platform X on Monday "the left" assassinated Kirk.

"There is nothing left to talk about with the left. They hate us. They assassinated our nice guy who actually talked to them peacefully debating ideas," the congresswoman said. "Then millions on the left celebrated and made clear they want all of us dead. To be honest, I want a peaceful national divorce."

Many prominent Democrats have condemned Kirk's killing. California Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement the day of the activist's death that "we should all feel a deep sense of grief and outrage at the terrible violence that took place."

"Charlie Kirk's murder is sick and reprehensible, and our thoughts are with his family, children, and loved ones. I knew Charlie, and I admired his passion and commitment to debate," the governor continued. "His senseless murder is a reminder of how important it is for all of us, across the political spectrum, to foster genuine discourse on issues that deeply affect us all without resorting to political violence."

Former Vice President Kamala Harris also wrote on X that she was "deeply disturbed" by the shooting, noting she and former Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff were praying for Kirk's family.

"Let me be clear: Political violence has no place in America. I condemn this act, and we all must work together to ensure this does not lead to more violence," Harris wrote.
