History on Canterbury's side

History on Canterbury's side

Head coach Matt Corker will be eyeing a repeat Canterbury Rugby Club result when they visit the early National League 2 East frontrunners this Saturday.

The city club, who bounced back from the previous weekend's defeat at Dorking with a 56-26 victory against Havant at Merton Lane last Saturday, will travel to Old Albanian.

Canterbury's hosts defeated Dorking 34-21 last time out and have won five of their six league fixtures.

But Corker's men were 54-17 winners on their most recent league visit to St Albans in November 2024.

"Old Albanian had a poor start to the season last year but, in this calendar year, they haven't lost many games at all," said Corker. "It's going to be a real test.

"The last time we went there, we scored 50-odd points. It was a bit like the weekend just gone.

"We came into it on the back of a bit of a poor performance and we had a bit of a watershed moment where we decided to move the ball a bit more - and that's exactly what we did.

"That helped us run into the rest of the season. We know that'll probably be in their minds from last year.

"But we're very focused on just continuing to put our whole game together."

While the game will be a good test of the city outfit's credentials, those at the Hertfordshire club might well view Canterbury as genuine title rivals after their progress in recent years, setting the stage for a mouthwatering contest.

Corker said: "You always want to be in big games.

"To be involved in big games, you've got to be in a team people see as a threat.

"I said this to the lads when we went away to Dorking and this weekend has a very similar sort of feeling.

"You're going away to a good team but you're full of expectation.

"What's important for us is that we learn the lessons of Barnes away (an opening-day 26-14 loss) and Dorking away, and focus on those fine margins.

"We haven't been far off in the past but, to get over the line, we need to make sure we tighten up every part of our game."

Canterbury got back towards their best in a decisive bonus-point victory over Havant as they ran in eight tries, although they did allow the visitors themselves to get a losing bonus point through a late score.

Corker reflected: "One of our lads summarised it really well for us at the end.

"We wanted to go out, get our attack up-and-running, score tries and that's exactly what we did. We scored 50 points at home against National League opposition so that was really pleasing.

"We scored some really nice tries, as well, which was something we wanted to go out and do.

"To put that on tape, it's something we're really proud of and it actually was a really big moment for us. We needed to get that part of our game up-and-running.

"I think it puts us into a good position, going into the weekend. We didn't really want them to get the bonus point so we'll be looking at their maul defence.

"We had some really good efforts in that area but a couple at the back-end let us down.

"As always, there's a couple of things for us to focus on to keep us moving forward. But we're really happy with the lads.

"What's really important from our perspective is how hard they worked. We did score some really good tries but we earnt every single one of them.

"I've watched a clip where we turned the ball over on our 22. We then attacked for 90 seconds to work our way down the pitch to score.

"I think that's a really good sign of a functioning and threatening attack."

For the second successive weekend, Tyler Oliver got the city club's first try, with the No.8 adding a second before the end of the first half this time around.

There were two tries apiece for forward Charlie McGovern and winger Harvey Furneaux while back-rower Ryley Thomas and prop Lewis Young were other home players to dot down.

On Oliver, Corker said: "He's scored some great tries and he's being a real threat with the ball.

"What's really pleasing from our perspective is the forwards are working extremely hard.

"It was good to see Garry Jones back on the pitch and looking threatening, and Harvey Furneaux had a good game, as well, on the wing.

"In these games, the headlines go to the guys scoring the tries but every single try was under-pinned by a team effort."
