Village 30 minutes from Watford with a rich film and TV history

If you have sat in front of the television or been to the cinema in the last 60 years or so, there is a very good chance you will have laid eyes on Aldbury, a charming village located just a stone's throw from Watford.

It has been in the news recently after serving as a filming location for Netflix film The Thursday Murder Club but seasoned viewers will know the cameras are never too far away from the otherwise quiet settlement.

If you take the 30-minute drive from Watford for a daytrip, you may well recognise locations from a variety of popular programmes and films.

Long before the name became synonymous with American superhero blockbusters, The Avengers was a 1960s television programme in England, with two episodes shot in Aldbury.

In 1967 it was also used for a scene in The Dirty Dozen starring Charles Bronson.

Slightly younger viewers may recognise The Greyhound pub for its appearance in 2004's Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, while a boozer also featured in the 1999 film Parting Shots. That film also included Aldbury's village pond, as did Hopscotch, which was released 19 years earlier.

Back to the small screen and Midsomer Murders fans may well recognise some of the locations in two episodes - "Written in Blood" and "Murder of Innocence" - while a 1992 episode of Inspector Morse was shot there.

The most recent filming for Netflix is said to have seen a boom in Google searches for the village, with 1.9 million reported since its release on August 28.

The Thursday Murder Club utilised various locations, including the aforementioned pond, as well as the memorial hall, transformed by Netflix into Fairhaven Police Station for the film.
