Beyond the bells: Shire Salvos demand is 'all year round' as cost-of-living crisis bites

The notion that community support services hit peak demand only around Christmas is a myth actively dispelled by the Shire Salvos.

The team operating across Sutherland Shire, at Heathcote, Miranda, and Menai, is facing constant, intense demand for essential help, fuelled by the pressure of the cost-of-living crisis.

"Realistically, this need goes across the whole year," said James Redwood, Salvation Army Mission Leader for Heathcote.

While the crisis impacts the whole community, the Salvos has strategically positioned their sites to tackle specific vulnerabilities, creating a comprehensive network of support across the area.

The Heathcote site, known as the 'Hope Shop,' is specifically geared towards providing a lifeline for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, particularly rough sleepers residing in the nearby Royal National Park.

The centre provides shower and laundry facilities (with a new shower being installed) and keeps vital survival supplies like sleeping bags, tents, and camping mattresses on hand.

A dedicated homelessness support worker is available three days a week to offer one-on-one assistance with government forms, goal setting, and long-term planning.

The hub operates as a second-hand retail store and a welcoming community space, providing free hot drinks, warm meals, and connection to combat loneliness. Food relief, including a choice-based food rescue system, is a core offering.

The Miranda site functions as a key hub for immediate financial and specialist crisis support, focusing heavily on vulnerable individuals and families facing complex issues.

The centre is a main point of access for short-term financial assistance and food relief, including food hampers and regular community meals.

Miranda coordinates transitional housing options for vulnerable individuals and families, often in collaboration with partners like Platform 9 (Kingsway Community Care) to establish long-term housing solutions.

They offer Alcohol and Other Drugs case management, the Positive Lifestyle Program (focused on self-awareness and emotional health), and the You're the Boss Program for financial education for 16 to 25-year-olds.

The site houses Reconnect, a counselling service committed to helping young people (12-18) and their families restore healthy relationships and prevent early home-leaving.

One recipient of the support highlighted the profound impact of this holistic care, recalling a financial counsellor at Miranda: "I remember being in line [for a food hamper]... She brought me inside [to the office] and said, 'It's going to be OK,'... I was that broken. I'm now 16 months sober."

The Menai site centres its support on building community resilience through structured programs for different life stages. It runs programs and events for children and families, along with regular gatherings and events for youth and young adults, including the ONEighty Youth group.

Menai actively partners with schools, providing crucial breakfast and lunch programs to support student well-being and offering the Positive Lifestyle Program adapted for high school teens. They also host the biannual community kids camp for referred Year 5 and 6 students.

Regular social gatherings, events, and programs are specifically designed to support connection and purpose for community members aged 50 and over.

The site offers essential financial counselling and welfare support services.
