One of the Best Sci-Fi Movies of Modern Times Is Heading To Free Streaming

One of the best science fiction blockbusters of all time is all set to stream for free next month. Released in 2021, Dune , AKA Dune: Part One, is director Denis Villeneuve 's first foray into the epic world of author Frank Herbert, and introduces audiences to the expansive universe of the distant future, following the noble heir Paul Atreides as he and his family are tasked with taking charge of the hostile desert planet Arrakis.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve with a screenplay by Jon Spaihts, Villeneuve, and Eric Roth, Dune is led by Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, with the stellar supporting cast comprised of Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem. Dune is due to land on the streaming platform Tubi from February 1, and you can check out the official synopsis below.

"Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, must travel to a dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet's exclusive supply of a precious resource in existence, only those who can conquer their own fear will survive."

'Dune' Boasts Scores of 83% From Critics & 90% From Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes Close

The first Dune was met with widespread acclaim, landing a score of 83% from critics and an even better 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie went on to be nominated in 10 categories at the 94th Academy Awards, winning six, including Best Visual Effects and Best Original Score for Hans Zimmer. Despite complications caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and Warner Bros.' same day streaming release strategy, Dune still managed to gross $407.7 million at the global box office.

Related Sorry, but 'Dune: Part Two' Isn't Denis Villeneuve's Best Sci-Fi Film

Despite the mega-success of 'Dune: Part Two,' 'Arrival' remains Denis Villeneuve's best science fiction movie.

This success saw Dune get a sequel, last year's Dune: Part Two, which fared even better with both critics and audiences alike. Adding the likes of Florence Pugh (Black Widow, Oppenheimer), Christopher Walken (The Deer Hunter, Seven Psychopaths), Léa Seydoux (No Time to Die), and Austin Butler (Elvis, Once Upon a Time...In Hollywood) to the already stacked cast, Dune: Part Two continues the saga of Paul Atreides and the people of Arrakis. The follow-up also bested its predecessor at the box office, grossing $714.4 million worldwide but, controversially, has done less well at this year's Oscars.

A third installment in the Dune franchise is now in the works, with director Denis Villeneuve set to return one last time. The next sequel, Dune Messiah, has been given a release date of December 18, 2026, and will begin with a major time jump, picking up with Paul "Muad'Dib" Atreides, expected to be played once again by Timothée Chalamet, who has ruled as Emperor for 12 years. "The story takes place 12 years after where we left the characters at the end of Part Two," Villeneuve said of the threequel. "Their journey, their story is different this time, and that's why I always say that while it's the same world, it's a new film with new circumstances."
