Varanasi: Sikandarpur police in Ballia district arrested a cattle smuggler following exchange of fire late Wednesday night. Ballia ASP (Northern) Dinesh Kumar Shukla said on Thursday that Sikandarpur police were checking vehicles on the road leading from Kharid towards the river when a motorcycle-borne person was signalled to stop. The biker tried to flee but slipped and fell on the road.Seeing himself surrounded by police, he opened fire in a bid to escape. In retaliatory firing by police, he suffered a bullet injury in the leg and was held. He was identified as Brajesh of Ghosi in Mau . After recovering a pistol, cartridges and the motorcycle from him, police rushed him to the hospital.During questioning, Brajesh divulged he was heading towards Bihar with a cattle-laden truck, which was intercepted by police. His accomplice was arrested and the truck was seized, but he had made attempt to escape.
