'Godzilla x Kong' Sequel Adds 'Stranger Things' Star to Next 'Monsterverse' Movie

'Godzilla x Kong' Sequel Adds 'Stranger Things' Star to Next 'Monsterverse' Movie

Legendary's Monsterverse just keeps getting bigger and bigger with each passing movie. Not just in terms of the Titans they add, but with the cast members that join the franchise - the names of which are almost as big as the beasts themselves. Now, another iconic star has joined the new Godzilla x Kong sequel that's currently in the works by director Grant Sputore, which is expected to begin filming in Australia next month.

Per Deadline, Matthew Modine is the newest cast member added to the mix, alongside the already announced Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O'Connell and Delroy Lindo. Dan Stevens will also be returning as the monster veterinarian and dentist Trapper, and while Modine's role has yet to be disclosed, word has it he'll be playing a general in the latest Monsterverse film, which is being written by David Callaham. Plot details remain under wraps, but it is said to feature "several new human characters alongside the beloved and iconic Titans Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat." Isn't that always the way?

Younger fans will recognize Modine from his time on Stranger Things where he portrayed Dr. Martin Brenner, a.k.a. Papa to Millie Bobby Brown's Eleven. Those of us with a few more years of experience know him best from such classic films as Full Metal Jacket, Vision Quest, and Birdy. Modine also played a key role in the award-winning Oppenheimer in 2023, and most recently appeared in the Netflix political thriller Zero Day alongside Robert De Niro.

Matthew Modine Is Excited To Be Joining the 'Monsterverse'

Modine, 65, brings a wealth of experience with him to the new Monsterverse movie, which is expected to be yet another titan-sized hit following the more than $570 million dollars that 2024's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire brought in at the box office. The Gross Anatomy and Memphis Belle star took to social media to release a statement regarding his casting in the next film, highlighting the incredible talent he gets to work with, while at the same time mentioning he's excited to get things started.

"I'm excited to join such an iconic and fan-driven franchise, especially getting to work alongside talents like Dan Stevens, Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O'Connell, and Delroy Lindo. The Monsterverse has been doing amazing things in film and beyond, and I can't wait to get to work on this next phase of it."

Thus far, the Monsterverse has grossed more than $2.5 billion dollars worldwide, and has been met with generally favorable reviews from both critics and fans, who appreciate the movies not only for their obvious action, but for the human characters that add a lot of heart to the films. The franchise got even bigger in 2023 with the addition of the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the second season of which is expected to drop either late in 2025 or early 2026.

The new Godzilla x Kong sequel has set a tentative release date of March 26, 2027, so it'll still be a while before we get there. In the meantime, you can check out the latest entry in the saga, The New Empire, streaming now on both Max and Netflix.
