Tullinga Dorpers is red hot: average up $1750 with increased ram offering

The Wald family's fourth annual Tullinga Dorpers ram sale has posted a marked rise in prices, with buyer sentiment boosted by swelling confidence in the lamb market coupled with two bouts of torrential rainfall.

The Condobolin stud sold all 126 rams to a $16,000 top to average $5406 - a substantial jump on last year's result where 109 rams averaged $3653.

The pace never let up - despite a brief pause in proceedings due to extreme weather - and there were several new buyers operating as well as loyal return clients.

The top-priced ram was the proven sire, Tullinga Fat Yak 223645, and was knocked down to Ian Lilburne, Hay.

The ram was embryo-transfer bred by Draft Burrawang 200992 and from Burrawang 151327.

At two years and eight months, he weighed 131 kilograms with 49 millimetres eye muscle depth and 4mm fat.

Fat Yak had 36 sons offered in the sale and was described as the most influential ram Tullinga had bred.

Selling for the second top price of $14,000 was another proven sire in Tullinga Storm 223469. The ram, three years old and 134kg, sold online to the Fair family, Lake Cargelligo.

The Pennell family of Stansbury Dorpers, Kenebri, outlaid $7000 for Tullinga 240033, a son of Fat Yak and weighing 97kg at 18 months.

The type five scanned 49mm EMD and 4.5mm fat.

Row and Cheyenne Pennell said they were a relatively new stud and had started breeding White Dorpers this year.

They favoured the ram's structural correctness, meat and muscle.

Other stud activity included Rob Ramsay, Amani White Dorpers, Quandialla, who paid $7000 for Tullinga 240450.

Mr Ramsay was a new buyer at the stud and was looking for a type five ram with outcross genetics.

His stud sold rams to western Queensland and he particularly liked the ram's length of leg.

Barend Cronje, Tullinga's stud master, had also classed for Mr Ramsay and both studs were similar in type.

Bidding over the phone was Maurice Noske, Dunkeld, Vic, who selected a draft of three to average $5700.

His top pick was the $6500 Tullinga 240482, by Burrawang Firecracker 220392.

The twin-born type three, 99kg at 14 months, scanned 37mm EMD and 3mm fat.

Last year's top-priced buyer, A and B Rural Contracting, Coolabah, bought four rams averaging $5950.

Farm manager David Jackson said he was seeking twin-born rams with good growth.

His top pick at $7000 was Tullinga 240082, also by Fat Yak, The type four, 95kg at 18 months, weighed 57,6kg with 40mm EMD at seven months of age.

Other return clients included James and Victoria Boag, Nyngan, who took home four rams averaging $5375.

Mr Boag said they favoured long-bodied rams with sirey heads. They were aiming to turn lambs off early and were also looking for growth traits.

The Colless family, Condobolin, took home a draft of eight rams averaging $4862, while the Smith family, Nyngan, bought seven averaging $5714.

Argyle Station, Wanaaring and Eugowra, was a new buyer, and purchased six rams to average $6000.

Another new buyer was the Wiggins family, Nyngan, bidding for Westfarm Pastoral Co and Felton Agriculture.

The respective operations purchased six rams averaging $5850 and three rams averaging $5733.

Hamish Wald, Tullinga, said the result was overwhelming and far stronger than expected.

"It's extraordinary - it's what's happening in the industry at the moment," he said.

"The lamb price is just red hot, the demand for protein, the transition into these sheep.

"We're overwhelmed - we work really hard to produce good quality but to get a reward like that very rarely happens."

He said while it had been desperately dry all year, he was pleased with how the rams presented and thanked both new and return buyers for their support.

Forbes Livestock and Agency conducted the sale with auctioneer Randal Grayson. AuctionsPlus provided the online interface.
