Mobile man killed in hit-and-run; family looking for answers and Good Samaritan

Mobile police say 56-year-old Roney Williams was riding his motorcycle in the area of St. Stephens Road and Cox Street around 9 p.m. on October 21.

Police say Roney fell onto the roadway after he lost control of his bike. That's when a vehicle traveling south on Saint Stephens Road struck him but didn't stop.

It's been nearly three weeks since Roney passed, and Roney's wife says they still don't know who's responsible.

"I wish anybody that knows what happened-- please turn yourself in. He was kind and he'd help anybody," said Donyale Williams.

The family is pleading for answers.

"Speak up, we're hurting," added Selena Lunceford, Ronny's cousin. "And we just need to know why... why did you keep going? Why did you not stop?"

"When I think about how he died, that's what makes me emotional because I knew him all my life," added another family member.

The family says they also want to find the young woman who saw the tragedy and stopped to help Roney.

"I want to reach out to the young lady that helped my husband for his last breath," added Donyale.

"We're not sure the last words that he had to say or any of that, but we are grateful and thankful she was there to be there with him and that he wasn't alone," Lunceford chimed in.

On Sunday evening, purple and gold balloons rose into the sky as the sun set in Mobile- a nod to Roney's love for LSU. Tears were shed, and stories were shared. The family says Roney loved to barbecue, and that he was laid-back, soft-spoken, and dependable.

"'Babe' was his word, 'hey babe'- I will always just hold on to the memories of that... 'babe'," said Lunceford.

"William was a boss of mine and a very good friend of mine," added a friend.

Roney's pastor, Milton Todd, says he spoke to Roney at church the Sunday before he died.

"When Roney walked in the door, he burst into tears that day and was singing-- different than he'd ever been," said Pastor Todd. "This time, he was singing and just praising God and saying 'amen'. I'm so grateful to see him get to that day."

As the Whistler community navigates a world without their beloved Mr. Roney, the family can't stress this enough...

"If anyone is out there-- if they know something, please say something," said the family.

"Justice for my daddy," added Roney's son.

If you saw anything or know anything about the incident, call Mobile police right away at 844-251-0644. You don't even have to leave your name.
