One New York metro area was in the top 10 nationwide for the percentage of its residents who moved there from abroad, according census data.
About 1.7% of the population of the Watertown-Fort Drum metro area originally moved there from overseas, according to 2023 one-year census estimates, the most recent year available. That was the 10th-highest percentage in the nation.
It translates into over 1,900 Watertown-area residents who originally came from other countries.
Two other New York metro areas were in the top 100 for percentage of residents from abroad among more than 400 metro areas for which the Census Bureau had data.
About 1.1% of the New York City metro area's population originally came from abroad, tied for No. 35 in the U.S., and 0.9% of the population in Binghamton came from overseas, tied for No. 66 nationwide.
That's over 212,000 residents in New York City and more than 2,100 people in Binghamton.
The 2023 one-year estimates include data for places with populations of 65,000 and up. The data on residents from abroad reflects the populations of each metro ages 1 and up.
The Syracuse metro area tied for 144th in the U.S., with 0.6% of its population having moved to the area from overseas, according to the census data. That equates to more than 3,800 people.
The Syracuse metro area includes Madison, Onondaga and Oswego counties.
