According to NASA, the event will take place late on March 13 or early March 14 depending on the time zone, as the Moon will pass into Earth's shadow. It will be a total lunar eclipse meaning the entire Moon will fall into Earth's shadow while orbiting our planet.

What causes a lunar eclipse?

A lunar eclipse is caused when the Moon aligns behind Earth and falls into the darkest part of our planet's shadow. This region is called the umbra and it makes the Moon appear reddish orange. This is why it's also called 'Blood Moon.'

The Moon's reddish appearance is due to the sunlight splitting into its constituent colours when it passes through Earth's atmosphere.

NASA explains that it appears red because the shorter wavelength light passing through the Earth's atmosphere on its way to the Moon gets scattered and the light which has longer wavelength (red) gets projected on the Moon.

Will the lunar eclipse be visible in India?

No, the total lunar eclipse will not be visible in India. According to NASA, only the regions in Earth's western hemisphere will be able to witness it.

This includes countries in the Americas, parts of Africa, Europe, Australia and southeast Asia. NASA said that the Moon will start entering the Penumbra (outer part of Earth's shadow) at 8:57 pm PDT on March 13. The totality (when the Moon is completely in the umbra) will begin at 11:26 pm PDT and the eclipse will finally end at 3 am.
