Manchester United are aiming to secure a positive Europa League last-16 first leg result when they face Real Sociedad away from home this evening.

Man Utd received a bye into this stage of the competition after finishing third in the newly revamped league phase and are actually unbeaten in Europe this season, winning their last five matches in a row.

However, United could certainly do with a pick-me-up given their FA Cup fifth-round exit on penalties to Fulham at the weekend, which means their only hope of winning a trophy and securing European football for next season rests on the Europa League.

Sociedad required a knockout phase playoff to secure a spot in the round of 16 as they beat Danish outfit Midtjylland 7-3 on aggregate.

Although the Spanish side go into this evening's game at the Reale Arena on the back of a heavy 4-0 loss to Barcelona as well as losing 1-0 to Real Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final.
