There have been plenty of additions to the Chicago Bears roster and coaching staff this offseason, and two of the biggest on defense are defensive coordinator Dennis Allen and defensive tackle Grady Jarrett.
The Bears signed Jarrett shortly after he was released by the Atlanta Falcons on the first day of free agency. Now, he'll now be counted on to be a leader on the field and in the locker room with Allen coaching up the entire defense.
After their first days together during OTAs last week, Jarrett spoke to the media last week about what Allen's mindset is for the defense, and how they plan to be an aggressive unit. Understanding that it's going to take work from everyone top to bottom, Jarrett is looking forward to the challenge of lining up with Allen's defensive plan and getting his teammates to buy into it.
"We definitely want to be an attacking-style defense," Jarrett said last week. "We want to be fast, physical, know what we need to do on our assignments. He's been pretty clear on his expectations for everybody involved, from the front to the back end. I think it's going to take a lot of work for us to be able to achieve what we're capable of, but that's the beautiful part of it. It's a process, day in and day out, and just establishing the culture, the way we want to practice, the way we want to play the game. That's what it's about. I think we are all here just learning each other, putting our best foot forward every day to be able to put our best defensive product out there."
One of the biggest keys to bringing in Allen and his defensive scheme is getting the players to buy in, and having a seasoned veteran in Jarrett buy in from the very beginning could be big for the team's defense this upcoming season. An attacking, aggressive, and physical defense will bring back the glory days of when the Bears defense was memorable, successful, and captivated the fanbase, which has been missing for several years in recent memory.
