Dutch football legend claims he had Rangers manager talks

Dutch football legend Mark van Bommel claims he had discussions about the Rangers managerial role.

The 48-year-old, who has managed clubs like PSV and Wolfsburg, expressed interest in the position before Russell Martin was appointed.

However, he said the talks never progressed to the stage of speaking with the Rangers board.

Van Bommel, who has been out of work since leaving Royal Antwerp, spoke about the potential role on talkSPORT.

The former Barcelona, Milan, and Bayern Munich star said: "Yeah, there were some talks [to become the manager], but not directly to the board of Rangers.

"The Scottish league for me is a good league, and it's a challenge to become champion and play in Europe."

Van Bommel's managerial career has not been as successful as his playing days, with his first job at PSV ending after 18 months without a trophy.

He also lost his job at Wolfsburg after four months.

However, he enjoyed success in Belgium, achieving a league and cup double in 2023 and reaching another final the following year.
