Bayern's Hoeness says Eberl is 'sensitive,' laments transfer market

Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness has hinted at certain disagreements with head of sport Max Eberl in the recently concluded transfer window.

The Bundesliga champions have a much thinner squad than last season, with only Luis Díaz, Jonathan Tah, Tom Bischof and Nicolas Jackson added despite a host of exits.

"He would have liked to buy another player, but we know our financial situation. That is just as important as sporting success in the end. Look at Barcelona. If you buy, buy, buy... suddenly you have €1.2 billion in debt. Goodbye," Hoeness said during the 30th anniversary broadcast of Doppelpass on Sport1 on Sunday.

Hoeness added that it is normal to not always agree. He recalled his past rows with former chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge when Hoeness was club president, saying, "We often argued like mad, but ... it was fine again."

However, he noted, "Max is quite sensitive."

Hoeness also sharply criticized the massive sums being spent on football transfers, especially by English clubs. Bayern had been keen on Germany duo Florian Wirtz and Nick Woltemade from Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart respectively.

They were hugely outbid as Wirtz went to Liverpool for a fee rising to €150 million ($175 million) and Woltemade joined Saudi-owned Newcastle United for up to €90 million. Abu Dhabi-backed Manchester City also spent extensively and Qatar-owned Paris Saint-Germain are European champions.

"It's like the Monopoly game," Hoeness said. "Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia and Qatar are now in the game - and you have no chance against them."

He added that Bayern would "never" have shelled out the same amount as Liverpool for Wirtz and that Woltemade is "not worth €90 million."
