Bricks began to fall from a building in New Orleans' Central Business District on Saturday night, prompting police to close streets on the block around it.
O'Keefe Avenue from Girod to Lafayette streets, as well as Lafayette Street from O'Keefe to Baronne Avenue, were blocked off by police tape at 9 p.m. Police and firefighters surrounded the block.
Bricks from posts that support the building that houses The Helis Foundation John Scott Center, which includes contemporary art gallery and event space on the first floor, began to crumble and crack and fall to the sidewalk.
The facade of the building has apparently been undergoing some sort of renovations for at least a month. Crews are regularly seen on forklifts working on the exterior of the building.
Several apartments, lofts, restaurants and local businesses are nearby. It is unclear how long the roads will be closed and if there were evacuations.
New Orleans police have not yet released any details.
