EUGENE -- In a state-ranked clash of former Show-Me Conference members, the Eugene Eagles held on for a 67-61 win Friday night against the St. Elizabeth Hornets.

St. Elizabeth led 14-11 after one quarter, but the Hornets committed 11 turnovers in the next eight minutes. Justice Allen made three 3-pointers in the second quarter to put Eugene ahead 34-27 at halftime.

The Eagles led by as many as 11 points midway through the third quarter, then the Hornets went on a 9-0 run to close the gap to 51-49 entering the fourth quarter.

A layup by Nick Heckemeyer put St. Elizabeth back in front 53-51 with 5:48 remaining, then Heckemeyer answered with another basket for a four-point lead with just under five minutes to play. Following a timeout, Allen knocked down a 3 and Ryder Belt drove to the basket for a layup, giving Eugene the lead back at 56-56 with 4:15 to play.

Eugene never gave back the lead, outscoring St. Elizabeth 7-4 in the final 1:06.

Allen and Belt each scored 22 points to lead the Eagles.

For the Hornets, Blake Wobbe had a team-high 13 points with four 3s, followed by Heckemeyer with 11 points and Carter Reinkemeyer with 10 points. Gavin Williams finished with nine points, 14 rebounds and six assists.

Eugene (6-1), ranked No. 2 in Class 2, plays next weekend in the Joe Machens Great 8 Classic at Fleming Fieldhouse. The Eagles play Tulsa Union, Okla., in the first round at 4 p.m. Friday.

St. Elizabeth (6-3), ranked No. 7 in Class 1, turns around and plays another state-ranked matchup today against Class 1 No. 6 Wheatland (6-1) in the OCHC Shootout. Tip-off is at 2:30 p.m. at Weaubleau.
