Nintendo is known for some of the most popular games in video game history, so it's unsurprising that it's also made some amazing movies and TV shows. More recently, it flaunted its adaptation abilities with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and to the excitement of cinephiles and gamers alike, this was only the start of what's in store for the Nintendo cinematic universe.
Although they don't all have set release dates, Nintendo is currently working on several new movies, two of which are sequels and one that introduces an entirely new live-action world. Excitingly, if these movies do well, Nintendo fans can likely expect even more beloved games to get a movie treatment of their own in the not-so-distant future.

As mentioned previously, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a huge hit among fans of the video game, as well as non-gaming viewers. It followed the plumber brothers Mario and Luigi as they were transported from Brooklyn to the Mushroom Kingdom and Dark Lands, respectively. Separated in this new world, they were quickly drafted into a battle between Princess Peach and the evil Koopa King, Bowser, the latter of whom was determined to marry Peach and wouldn't take no for an answer. As the threat of Bowser's destructive Super Star loomed over the Kingdom, Mario and Princess Peach teamed up with Donkey Kong, Toad, and other Nintendo characters to stop Bowser, defeat his army of Koopas, and reunite with Luigi.
Exciting Super Mario Bros. 2 Updates Close
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the newest adaptation of the beloved game series, but it's far from the only one. There were several previous films, anime, and TV
shows, including The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! , The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, and the first-ever movie based on a game, Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! While many of these films and shows achieved cult or even mainstream popularity, The Super Mario Bros. Movie represents a resurgence in interest in and appreciation for the game.
With an audience score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, it's unsurprising that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is getting a sequel. The voice behind Mario, Chris Pratt, has expressed enthusiasm about the project, and Toad's VA Keegan-Michael Key has shared that the sequel will include interesting bits of video game lore and Easter eggs. With over 200 games featuring Mario and his friends, there are so many directions the sequel can go in. As of now, The Super Mario Bro.'s Movie 2's release is scheduled for April 3, 2026, which gives fans plenty of time to rewatch the movie and replay the games beforehand.

The Pokémon series is one of the most beloved franchises of all time, and when the first Detective Pikachu movie was announced, fans were rightfully excited. Starring Justice Smith as former trainer Tim Goodman and Ryan Reynolds as the voice of Pikachu, the movie focused on the duo's attempt to find Tim's father, who had disappeared after a car accident. In their quest to learn what had happened to him, they came across a Pokémon fighting ring, a strange purple "R" gas, and various Pokémon acting strangely. In the end, the powers of friendship, family, and Pokémon-human bonds were all tested as Tim and Pikachu came face-to-face with a sinister new form of "evolution."
Gotta Be the Very Best

To be fair, Detective Pikachu wasn't loved by all Pokémon fans. Some thought that the tone didn't match that of the games, while others thought the focus was more-
on the stars behind the movie, as opposed to the Pokémon themselves. Some also believed that the first live-action Pokémon movie should be based on a more popular game or follow a more popular character, such as Ash. Still, many view Detective Pikachu as a great family movie, and at the time, it was the highest-grossing video game movie ever.
For a while, there were doubts that a sequel would ever come to be. However, a recent data leak revealed that the movie has been in production since 2021, and Jordan Vogt-Roberts is set to direct it. Rumored to be titled The Great Detective Pikachu, little is known about the movie, but fans are already coming up with theories about what will happen and wish lists for where the film will take place. Given lessons learned from the first movie and the excitement surrounding the new one, The Great Detective Pikachu (...or whatever it winds up being called) has all the potential to be among the very best video game adaptations.

The game-to-movie adaptation that fans want most, The Legend of Zelda, has been confirmed to be in development as of 2023. The games focus on the heroic Link as he fights monsters, searches for the Triforce fragments, and attempts to save Zelda. There have been 29 installments in the game universe so far, giving plenty of options for where and what the movie can explore, as well as plenty of direction for even more movies in the future.
Director Wes Ball has big plans for the live-action film, with the goal of making viewers feel like they're in Hyrule alongside Link. Drawing inspiration from the works of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki, Ball has referred to the game series as "one of the most important things ever in my life." While not much more information about the upcoming movie is currently known, it's hard not to catch his enthusiasm.
Past Fumbles, Future Goals Close
In 2015, Netflix allegedly was in talks to create a Legend of Zelda live-action series. However, also allegedly, the show was canceled after information about it was leaked. There was also an adult anime pitched in 2021, but as of now, it hasn't gone anywhere. So, as eager as fans are for The Legend of Zelda, they should also proceed with caution, since earlier attempts have been unsuccessful.
At the same time, it's hard not to get excited over the movie's potential. Fans already have some ideas for who should play several of the characters, including the aforementioned Princess Zelda, the evil Ganondorf (aka Ganon), and the main character himself, Link. Hopefully, the movie will proceed forward without any additional hiccups, making way for even more Zelda movie adaptations -- and Nintendo movie adaptations in general -- to come.
