The Mavericks reportedly plan to select Cooper Flagg, not make another controversial trade

The Mavericks reportedly plan to select Cooper Flagg, not make another controversial trade

The Dallas Mavericks shocked everyone when they got the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, which gives them the chance to draft Cooper Flagg.

While this was bad news for franchises like the Wizards, it was fantastic news for Mavericks executive Nico Harrison. After a controversial decision to trade former franchise superstar Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this year, some wondered if Dallas would make another bold choice and decide to trade the pick.

After all, Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo is reportedly "open-minded" about a potential move away from the Bucks. After the San Antonio Spurs got the No. 2 overall pick in this draft, some have already linked as potential suitors in a blockbuster.

Wouldn't the rights to the first selection have even more value than the second?

More: Would Nico Harrison trade the Mavericks' No. 1 pick for Giannis Antetokounmpo? Hmm.

It might have sounded crazy when you first read that idea.

But it's not like Flagg (who skipped his senior year of high school to play in college) fits the same timeline as the 35-year-old Klay Thompson, the 33-year-old Kyrie Irving, or the 32-year-old Anthony Davis.

However, according to NBA insider Tim MacMahon, that is not happening (via ESPN):

Marc Stein, another league insider, echoed similar reporting on Tuesday as well.

It makes sense why an organization like the Mavericks would want to make the no-brainer choice right now rather than one that is perhaps riskier and more polarizing. Harrison is not the most popular guy in the city right now.

But it is worth noting, though, that Dallas does not have much of a young core except for fellow Duke alum Dereck Lively and Max Christie.

Plus, there is some positional overlap for Flagg with P.J. Washington as well.

But regardless, per MacMahon, all mock drafts can certainly pencil in Dallas to select the former Blue Devis superstar with the first pick. We can start to predict their starting lineup (once Kyrie Irving is healthy) as well.
