There were a lot of firsts for the Marion Hungry Mothers on Saturday night, the most notable of which was their initial victory.
The independent college baseball summer-league squad posted an 11-5 victory over the Carolina Disco Turkeys at Wake Forest University's David F. Couch Ballpark in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in their inaugural game.
J.T. Thompson (Concord University) was the franchise's first batter as he was hit by a pitch to begin the game and later scored the team's first run.
Will Epstein (Virginia Commonwealth University) had the first hit and pitcher Lance Burnett (New River Community College) got the start on the mound and notched the first strikeout.
Epstein finished with two hits, while Concord's M.J. Hunter scored two runs.
Bluefield University's Caleb "C.B." Johnson (Northwood) had a hit and scored a run, Milligan's Connor Smith (Chilhowie), Carter Babb (Gate City) of the University of Virginia's College at Wise and Concord's Owen Repass (George Wythe) each scored a run, while Southwest Virginia Community College's Ben Kilbourne (Chilhowie) and J.P. Eads (John Battle) each drove in a run.

Bluefield University's Talan Poe (Chilhowie) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to close out the game, while Emory & Henry University's Carter Sayers (Marion) also saw some time on the mound. E&H's Alex Vaught was the winning pitcher.
Marion plays its first home game at 6:30 p.m. on Memorial Day against Carolina.
