WILMINGTON, N.C.- A jury convicted Keisha Baldwin of first degree murder after she shot Tammy Hayes.
Hayes was at the Edge Lounge on February 26, 2022, partying with family members. Hayes and Baldwin got into a dispute, and it escalated.
The Hayes family remembers Tammy for her outgoing personality.
"The life of the party, because even before she left here, she was just having fun. She was just dancing and not even bothered," said Yolanda Hayes, Tammy's sister.
Baldwin will now have to serve life without parole.
"I'm happy that Tammy got justice, and I'm happy that our family got justice because this was so senseless," said Yolanda.
The Hayes family has dealt with many deaths this past decade, including Tammy's brother, who didn't get to see justice served.
"When Tammy passed away... we are like a close-knit family, my mom has six kids. We are so close that it really broke my brother Mike's heart. He didn't live much longer after that," explains Yolanda.
She says their mother also passed in January 2025.
While angry at Baldwin's actions, Yolanda says she hopes she will learn the damage that she has done.
"I hope she becomes an upstanding citizen and she changes from the inside out," said Yolanda.
Her faith has been restored in the judicial system.
"It gives me hope in the judicial system because sometimes we can be like they're not going to face the consequences of what they've done," said Yolanda.
She also finds comfort in her walk with God.
"We just have to stand on the promises. If he rose from the dead, then he gave us everlasting life, and I believe in that," said Yolanda.
