Bruno Guimaraes approves Newcastle United stadium change and wants quick Wembley return | Chronicle Live

As Bruno Guimaraes chatted with journalists with the adrenaline of his last-minute winner still pouring out of him - the last man to lift a trophy as captain of Newcastle United spoke fondly about his love affair with the Carabao Cup.

Bruno was reduced to tears at Wembley last March after finally leading Newcastle to a priceless piece of silverware with that 2-1 win over Liverpool.

As he stood in the interview area in the Milburn Stand reception, a host of Newcastle greats looked down upon him from the grand hallway.

In that area of the stadium hangs a colour portrait of Bob Moncur lofting the old Inter-City Fairs Cup in 1969. Next to Moncur is the team of 1952 with Joe Harvey lifting the FA Cup, while there is acknowledgement of the 1996 team that came close to winning the Premier League, with a picture of David Batty adorning the walls.

Bruno was asked if he'd love to see his own portrait up there with the Carabao Cup one day, and he wholeheartedly agreed, but he knows that sentiment and nostalgia already goes out of the window as Newcastle's defence of the cup continues against Spurs.

The Brazil international told Chronicle Live: "It means a lot. We want to keep making history.

"We went 70 years without a win, but we can make it two in two. It's a big possibility, a big opportunity, so we don't want to miss it.

"It's going to be a big game for us, and we hope we're gonna be ready to take advantage in the game.

"It's a big moment, and even more because we won last season. We want to do it again, keep making history, against a great and very focused team."

United skipper Bruno fired home the winner against Fulham at the weekend as the last-gasp win secured a 2-1 win. He will hope that the Spurs game will be more plain sailing as Thomas Frank's side head to the North East.

But Bruno was delighted with the fighting spirit on show against the Cottagers. The Brazil star said: "We were not at our best to be fair, but even with our difficulties, we found a way to win the game.

"It was a special moment to score at the end because we have been punished that way against Liverpool and Arsenal.

"We have suffered at the end of games, but against Fulham, it was our turn to find a way to win.

"I was very pleased for everyone. It is not easy to play Tuesday-Saturday (after Benfica), and we have to keep it going. But I am very happy."

It remains to be seen whether Bruno is guaranteed a start against the London side, with Howe pondering squad rotation. Bruno said: "I want to play 90 minutes every time!

"But I have to see what the staff say, if the gaffer wants me to pla,y I will be ready to do so as always.

"Tottenham is a big, big moment. We won the Carabao Cup last season to make history.

"On Monday, we start to focus on Spurs. Now, we will enjoy this one; we know there is a big game coming.

"Hopefully, we can get eight hours of sleep in before then!"
