According to figures obtained by Medical Negligence Assist, 56 claims have been lodged against Somerset NHS Foundation Trust since 2020, and 29 of those were settled.
The figures come soon after the government said 14 hospitals - including the Somerset NHS Foundation Trust - would be the focus of a national maternity investigation.
The investigation was announced in June 2025 by Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting.
The total amount of compensation paid by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust over the past five years is of £23,616,054, with the highest amount being £16,210,500 in the 2023/24 financial year, the figures - which were gathered by NHS Resolution - show.
The trust oversees Musgrove Hospital in Taunton and Yeovil Hospital in Yeovil. A spokesperson for the trust said they focus on what 'needs to be done differently' when things go wrong in maternity care.
The spokesperson said: "We aim to provide the highest standards of patient care across all our services and have robust governance systems in place to report, investigate and respond when patients' care falls short of those standards.
"When things go wrong, we work hard to identify what happened, what needs to be done differently and any lessons that can be learned, including additional training that can be shared with colleagues to improve our services."

The trust also explained that some cases relating to birth injuries will take 'many years' to resolve and that payments will be made in instalments, which means the payments may be related to cases notified/or settled over a number of years.
According to the figures, the biggest number of claims made against the trust was in 2022/3 and 2023/4 - with a total of 13 each.
The most common birth injury assigned to claims made against the Somerset NHS Foundation Trust was additional operations, with nine claims.

Gareth Lloyd, a medical negligence solicitor for legal firm JF Law, said: "The NHS routinely pays out millions of pounds in compensation every year for entirely avoidable injuries suffered by both mother and baby as a result of substandard maternity care.
"If a baby is not delivered correctly, the nature of these injuries can often be life-changing, affecting not only the child but the entire family."
According to figures, 5,991 claims have been made against NHS trusts across the country since 2020 for obstetric negligence.
Of these claims, 2,955 were settled with trusts having to pay out a total of £2,242,073,583 in compensation to claimants who may have suffered a range of injuries.
