Elks Lodge has a new home in Rochester

Elks Lodge has a new home in Rochester

Dec. 21 -- ROCHESTER -- After eight years in the Hillcrest Shopping Center, the Elks Lodge #1091 has migrated to a new home in northwest Rochester.

The Elk Lodge recently signed a lease to move into a space at 1310 Seventh St. NW in the west building of the Northgate Center. While the club has already started meeting in the new place, construction is under way to remodel it to better suit the club and other groups that might like to book it for meetings or gatherings.

That means the Elks Lodge, which has 226 members, is no longer sharing space with Charlie's Eatery & Pub at 1652 US 52 North in the Hillcrest Shopping Center.

"In the last six months, we've been kind of doing a self-introspection on what our needs are looking towards the future. In our location at Charlie's, we were limited in our abilities to use the facility to support our membership and other community activities," said the current Elks Exalted Ruler Matt Skinner. "We really appreciated the opportunity at Charlie's, but we just felt we could do something a little more personal for our membership and for the community."

Skinner cited Northgate owner and Elks member Don Prow as key to making this move happen,

"We feel this is going to be a great place for us to provide our membership more opportunities to come in and celebrate because we are a social club with a lot of community service potential," he said.

The new space does not have a kitchen, so the Elks are looking to contract with local caterers to provide food and drinks at their events. Groups renting the space will be able to choose their own caterer.

Skinner added that the lodge plans to have an open house celebration in 2025, after the renovation work is completed, to introduce the new home of the Rochester Elks.

"We'll welcome the public in for that to see what we're up to and perhaps even fill out a membership application," he said.

This marks the latest move by the Elks Lodge #1091.

In 2006, the Elks sold their building and surrounding land at 917 15th Ave. S.E. to the Zumbro Aerie 2228 of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. The Elks then leased space in the Hillcrest Shopping and sub-leased part of that space to the Wong's Café.

When Wong's moved to another building in 2016, the Elks faced a financial challenge. That was solved by Charlie Brannon moving Charlie's Eatery, formerly the Crown Restaurant & Lounge, out of the Brentwood on 2nd hotel into the Elks space.
