Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki was in attendance for Luka Doncic's Los Angeles Lakers debut on Monday night. While Nowitzki sent a literal message to Mavs fans about the decision, some think he also sent an unspoken on to the embattled Mavericks organization, as well.
In one of the most shocking moves in NBA history, the Dallas Mavericks traded 25-year-old five-time All-NBA first team member Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and the Lakers' 2029 first-round pick. Davis unfortunately got hurt in his first game with the Mavericks and is expected to be out multiple weeks.
On social media, Dirk Nowitzki addressed his decision to attend Luka's Los Angeles debut, reasoning that while he's a "Mav for life," he had to "come support" Doncic. Dirk's final season in the NBA was Doncic's first.
One viral tweet suggested that Dirk's decision to attend Luka's home debut is also a subliminal statement directed at the Mavericks organization, who have understandably been receiving quite a bit of scrutiny for their decision to trade Doncic, widely considered to be a Top 10 player in the NBA with his best years still to come.
Given Dirk's stature within the Mavs organization and fanbase as arguably the most legendary player in the history of the franchise, his words obviously carry quite a bit of weight with both parties.
In the Lakers' 132-113 home win over the Utah Jazz, which improved their record to 32-19, Doncic -- in his first game back from injury in seven weeks -- played 24 minutes at had 14 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
