Texas hospital bounces back from cyberattack

Lubbock, Texas-based UMC Health System has successfully restored its systems following a cyberattack in September that temporarily disrupted operations, EverythingLubbock.com reported on Dec. 9.

UMC CEO Mark Funderburk released a statement stating that the hospital has been operating normally for several weeks. In response to the incident, UMC has also made additional investments to enhance its cybersecurity defenses.

The breach, discovered on Sept. 26, allowed hackers to access certain hospital computer systems between Sept. 16 and Sept. 26. Potentially exposed information due the breach includes individuals' addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, diagnoses, health insurance details, provider names, and dates of treatment.

UMC Health System has begun notifying all affected individuals about the potential data theft.
