It would have been from the 2000s or circa 1998-1999 at the earliest, i got it as a gift as a teenager. It was one of those murder mystery puzzles where the answer was in the puzzle and you had all these paperwork with clues alongside it. The setting was some kind of photo lab (maybe one in high school?) and i remember the puzzle picture being the darkroom - so the picture was largely shades of pink, red, and black.

Googling gives me more recent murder mystery puzzles. I didn't finish it at the time but I'm kinda inspired to revisit it. Where do I even start looking?
