Sharon Horgan's "gripping" true-crime drama The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox has landed a release date on Hulu and Disney +.

The eight-episode limited series, inspired by the true story of Amanda Knox, will premiere its first two episodes on Wednesday, 20 August, with new episodes following weekly.

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox stars Nine Perfect Strangers' Grace Van Patten as Knox, the exchange student who was wrongfully imprisoned for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher in 2007.

Bad Sisters star and creator Horgan will play Knox's mother Edda Mellas, while Knox herself serves as the show's executive producer, with Monica Lewinsky also producing.

Per the press release, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox will blend "gripping pacing with emotional complexity" while following Knox's "15-year fight to clear her name".

The Hulu Original limited series promises to offer up a "broader commentary on public perception and the rush to judgment".

The description reads: "The TV show is inspired by the story of how Amanda Knox was wrongfully convicted for the tragic murder of her roommate, and her 15-year odyssey to set herself free.

"Each episode unpacks pivotal moments -- the investigation, forensic interpretations, the court of public-opinion waging on in headlines -- to ultimately reveal how an innocent student reclaimed her life."

Meanwhile, Horgan is teaming up with Jennifer Aniston for a TV adaptation of Jennette McCurdy's best-selling memoir I'm Glad My Mom Died.

Horgan is adapting the book, while Aniston is set to play the "narcissistic" mother raising a child star.
