The crisis engulfing Manchester United appears to be deepening with each passing day as Ruben Amorim's future looks uncertain.
Following their shocking second-round Carabao Cup elimination at the hands of League Two side Grimsby Town, United were comprehensively outplayed 3-0 in the Manchester Derby at the weekend. This campaign was meant to mark a fresh start for United's embattled manager following their 15th-place finish last term, alongside their heartbreaking Europa League final loss to Tottenham Hotspur, but things have got even worse.
However, despite a raft of new arrivals, Amorim finds himself facing mounting pressure once again. United currently sit 14th in the table with just one victory from four matches, which came courtesy of a last-gasp penalty against newly-promoted Burnley before the international break, and now it's said he has three games to save his job.
With fresh speculation about his job security emerging and a former United star making a "criminal" accusation, here's the latest developments from Old Trafford.
Ex-United keeper Ben Foster has made a significant assertion regarding Amorim's future in the Red Devils' hotseat, reports the Mirror.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Foster reckons Amorim is already on the owners' radar for dismissal, with plans being formulated, though nobody at Old Trafford wants to axe the Portuguese manager.
Foster declared: "It's already rumbling. It's already there. It's been rumbling for a long time. Nobody just wants to really commit to it.
"But I guarantee you, if, after eight games, they've got eight points and they're still in 14th or 15th position, somebody's gonna have to pull the trigger because it can't carry on like that because it's been proven now. It's nearly a year since he's been the manager. It won't work."
United began the Manchester derby with Altay Bayındir in goal, despite his history of howlers and bringing in a new goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on deadline day for £18.2million.
Calamity keeper Andre Onana, the former first-choice who cost £47m, also departed the club on loan to Turkish outfit Trabzonspor.
Nevertheless, ex-United midfielder Scholes insists that it would be a "criminal offence" if United weren't pursuing Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer to solve their goalkeeping crisis.
City ultimately secured the signing of PSG's Champions League-winning shot-stopper for merely £27m, with the Italian delivering an impressive display against United on Sunday.
"I don't think the quality is there [in the side]," Scholes told the BBC. "Goalkeeper was a major issue. Did they really need to get to the Grimsby game to realise [Andre] Onana is not good enough?
"If Manchester United were not in the market for Gianluigi Donnarumma when he became available, that is [a] criminal offence. The recruitment side went to buy forwards. That did need addressing, but did it need three of them? I'm not sure it did."
Discussing Amorim's notorious adherence to his 3-4-3 formation, a strategy many believe could cost the 40 year old his job, Scholes argued that United's manager needs to alter his approach.
"He cannot carry on playing this way, he just can't," Scholes declared. "At some point there has to be a moment where he thinks, 'I have to change something because what I am doing now is not working and I am not getting results'.
"The proof is there. I like Amorim, with everything he says, he seems to be a likeable man. But unfortunately results paint a picture."
