Summerville-area basketball teams and players have received preseason honors.
The South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association announced its 2024-25 Preseason Awards and Top 10 lists during a ceremony at Brookland-Cayce High School Nov. 20. Multiple Lowcountry teams received a Top 10 preseason ranking while athletes were recognized as some of the top players in the state.
The association ranks Ridge View as the top Boys team for Class 5A, Division 1. Following in the ranking, from second to 10th, are Dorman, Summerville, Mauldin, Sumter, Dutch Fork, Byrnes, West Ashley, Blythewood and River Bluff.
Summerville's Melvin Teal was selected as one of the division's Top 5 Seniors. He received All-State honors as both a sophomore and junior. Last season, Teal averaged 16 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals per game. River Bluff's Yasir Cromer, Byrnes' Evan Enos, Blythewood's Taurus (JJ) Lewis and Dorman's Keenan Whiteside also made the list.
Players named to the Elite Boys list for all classifications were Wilson's Josh Leonard and Tristan Thompson, Lancaster's Jordan Watford, Keenan's Brian Sumpter, Ridge View's Korie Corbett, Lexington's Kaleb Evans and Wren's Abijah Franklin.
The association ranks Rock Hill as the top Girls team for 5A, Division 1. Following in the ranking, from second to 10th, are JL Mann, Summerville, Mauldin, Spring Valley, Ashley Ridge, Dorman, Sumter, Dutch Fork and Carolina Forest.
Summerville's Molly Daugherty was named to the Elite Girls list. She also received All-State honors as both a sophomore and junior. Others named to the list are Lower Richland's Chi'nya Isaac, Rock Hill's Aubrey Stevenson, South Pointe's Ja'Nyia Cunningham, Westside's Khalia Hartwell, Andrew Jackson's Tamia Watkins, Military Magnet's Dream Watson and Camden's Braylin Mungo.
Summerville's Emma Daugherty and Ashley Ridge's Skyla Tuthill were selected for the division's Top 5 Seniors list.
Daugherty has battled injuries the past two seasons, but was considered an All-State candidate prior to suffering those injuries.
Tuthill, who has surpassed the 1,000 points scored benchmark, transferred to Ashley Ridge for her senior season. She formerly played for Catawba Ridge, where she was named her region's Player of the Year and received All-State honors.
Ridge View's Anasia Harvey, Byrnes' Te'Ericka Dowling and Dutch Fork's Michaela Fairwell round out that list.
The Goose Creek Boys are ranked No. 1 in the 5A, Division 2 preseason rankings. The Berkeley Boys are ranked seventh. Goose Creek's Shane Potts, Myrtle Beach's John Simmons, Fort Mill's Nas Berry, and Greenville's CJ Terrell and Roman Cooley are the divisions' Top 5 Seniors.
The Berkeley Girls are ranked third for the division. Fifth-ranked Goose Creek Girls are ranked fifth and tenth-ranked Lucy Beckham Girls are ranked 10th.
Other Lowcountry teams receiving a preseason ranking are the Bishop England Girls (4A), Oceanside Collegiate Girls (3A), Oceanside Collegiate Boys (3A), Woodland Girls (2A), Woodland Boys (2A), Cross Boys (A) and Military Magnet Girls (A).
Woodland's Ja'Kease Salley is on the 2A Boys Top 5 Seniors list and Military Magnet's Sabri Mitchell is on the 1A Girls Top 5 Seniors list.
