CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) -- After a petition moving to place Clarksburg's camping ordinance on a referendum was submitted earlier this week, city officials say that it doesn't have enough signatures.
12 News spoke to Clarksburg City Attorney Richard Marsh who said that according to the City Clerk and County Clerk, the petition would need 1,015 signatures to succeed, but the petition submitted only had 249 valid ones.
The committee that made the petition told 12 News it will pursue other avenues, including a potential legal challenge to the ordinance. The petition committee also said it has received a small grant to start a coalition to advocate for what it calls "more compassionate policies" for the unhoused.
Marsh said the city will send its official letter to the petition committee in the coming days.
