Police shoot armed man in Altamonte Springs on Christmas Day

An Altamonte Springs police officer and Seminole County deputy shot a man after he brandished a handgun on Christmas Day morning.The Altamonte Springs Police Department received a call at about 10:43 a.m. in the 700 block of Florida Boulevard. The caller told police her husband, Stephen Scherer, had behaved suspiciously the night before and requested to be escorted inside the home to pick up Christmas gifts.Police requested the family to leave the home after discovering Scherer was locked inside a bedroom. Officers said they tried persuading Scherer to come outside. However, Scherer broke through a window while holding a handgun.He then began moving toward other family members who were standing outside, according to police.Police said they used loud commands to urge Scherer to drop the weapon, and a police officer deployed his Taser to de-escalate the situation. Despite that, police said Scherer ignored the commands and turned toward his wife while raising the gun. According to police, an officer and deputy with the Seminole County Sheriff's Office discharged their weapons in response. Scherer was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, police said. He is now facing the charge of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, according to police.The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative while the incident is being investigation.
