Credit reports provide critical financial and personal information that businesses use to evaluate an individual's financial reliability for various applications, including rentals, loans, insurance, or employment. Errors in these reports can affect approval chances, making it important for individuals to stay informed about their credit status.

"Regularly checking your credit report is one of the best ways to protect yourself from scammers," Nessel stated. "Review all three reports to ensure you have a complete picture of your credit history and report wrong or questionable information to the credit bureaus."

Residents can access their free weekly credit reports through AnnualCreditReport.com, which is the only official site sanctioned by federal law for this purpose. Nessel advises caution with other websites offering free credit reports due to potential fraud risks.
