WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - The Wisconsin Valley Fair is still open until Sunday. Along with the carnival rides, rodeo, and demo derby, there's another fun event your kids won't want to miss, the Fairest of the Fair's princess tea party.
This year's Wisconsin Valley Fairest of the Fair is Selena Sann.
The 21-year-old grew up in Wausau, showing sheep at the fairgrounds. So, it's no surprise she's pursuing a degree working with animals.
"When I was a little girl, I always saw the fairest of the fair and knew that I wanted to do that someday," said Sann.
For 12 years, Sann was in any other fair kid's shoes, attending 4-H meetings, waking up early for the fair, and showing her sheep for judges. Now, her days look a little different.
"Promote the fair, promote what we all entail here, a big event that we go to is the June dairy breakfast of Marathon County," said Sann. "That's a great way to get the word out. See people say hi."
Along with being the Fairest of the Fair, Sann attends the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for animal science. Her goal is to become a livestock nutritionist.
"I just think it's so great to be able to learn these things that I'm, you know, taking in at school and offer them to different families that are also showing livestock and give them, you know, your tips and tricks about that nutrition side of things," she said.
She hopes she can also help those who are showing animals at county fairs across the state as well. But before she graduates in December, she's looking to create long-lasting memories as this year's Fairest of the Fair.
"When you're in this role, you really get to go have that one-on-one interaction with all these kids, all the youth exhibitors, all their families, and even just fair goers here at the fair. I think that one-on-one interaction and that connection with people is so cool," said Sann.
Sann says she hopes kids learn more about the responsibility of taking care of animals from her.
She'll be hosting the annual princess tea party at the Exhibition building in Marathon Park at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
