SANDY, Utah (ABC4) -- A bus driver with the Canyons School District was arrested on Wednesday following a months-long investigation into a cybertip regarding child pornography.
Val Whitehead, 69, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on one second-degree felony charge of sexual exploitation of a minor.
The Utah Attorney General's Office said it received the tip near the end of June, prompting the investigation by the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. The tip reported someone uploading child pornography into an image search in an attempt to find similar content.
According to court documents, the ICAC investigation led to Whitehead, who admitted to having several electronic devices, including a password-protected laptop in a backyard shed that no one else had access to. Whitehead's family reportedly told investigators Whitehead spent most of his time alone in the shed in the backyard.
Police say a search was conducted on the laptop where they recovered "several things relating to child erotica." Some videos reportedly contained bus drivers having sex with children.
According to court documents, Whitehead is a bus driver for the Canyons School District - which serves over 33,000 students in Sandy, Draper, and Cottonwood Heights. ABC4 has reached out to the Canyons School District to confirm and request comment and has yet to hear back at the time of publication. This story will be updated when ABC4 learns more.
Court records show Whitehead was ordered to be released from custody pending a pretrial hearing on conditions he appeared for all required court proceedings and did not commit any further crimes. Whitehead must also complete a weekly automated phone check-in.
