The UC Santa Barbara Softball team (12-13, 1-2 Big West) fell in their series finale to UC Riverside Sunday afternoon. The Gaucho offense was only able to muster one hit and fell 5-0.
In the first inning, UCR took an early lead with a single and then scored on a double, making the score 1-0. UC Santa Barbara's offense was unable to respond in their half of the first as they were retired in order with no hits recorded.
UC Santa Barbara managed to get their first hit of the game in the second inning when Mejia singled to second base. However, the effort was short-lived as the following batters were unable to advance Mejia, leaving the score unchanged at 1-0 in favor of UCR.
In the fifth inning the Highlanders increased their lead by scoring three runs. A combination of singles and an error allowed UCR to capitalize on their opportunities, bringing the score to 4-0.
UC Santa Barbara's lineup struggled to mount a comeback in the bottom of the inning as they were retired without a hit.
In the seventh inning, the Highlanders added one more run to their tally, bringing the score to 5-0. UC Santa Barbara's offense was unable to generate any momentum in the bottom of the inning, resulting in a final score of 5-0 in favor of UCR.
UC Santa Barbara finished the game with one hit and two errors, while UCR tallied ten hits and committed no errors.
The Gauchos will hit the road the next weekend as they travel to Cal State Fullerton. UC Santa Barbara and CSUF will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 15 with game one starting at 1 p.m.
