CORTLAND, N.Y. (WBNG) -- The City of Cortland Fire Department was dispatched to a possible structure fire at the Cortland Park Apartments.
Dispatch told them there was a grease fire, and residents could not extinguish it.
Crews arrived at Rickard Street with tools and extinguishers and saw moderate smoke in the hallway and inside the apartment of origin. The stovetop fire was mainly out, and crews used a "dry chemical" extinguisher on the remaining fire.
Officials said the resident at the address assisted with firefighting before placing a lid over the fire and evacuating the building.
After crews removed the smoke and metered the air for breathability, residents reentered the apartment.
Officials noted that the apartment complex has a large number of residents, making it more important than ever to stop the fire from getting out of control.
There were no reports of injuries.
The City of Cortland Fire Department would like to remind all residents never to put water on a grease fire and that smothering it is the best method of extinguishing it.
