Injury boost: Man United 'hopeful' over Cunha's fitness ahead of Manchester derby

Manchester United are reportedly 'hopeful' that Matheus Cunha will recover from injury in time for next Sunday's Manchester derby.

Manchester United are 'hopeful' that Matheus Cunha will be ready for the derby clash with Manchester City on September 14.

Cunha has started all four of Man United's competitive matches this season after arriving in a £62.5m move from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer.

However, unlike his first three matches, Cunha was unable to play the full duration of his most recent appearance due to injury.

Cunha appeared to sustain a hamstring injury in last weekend's 3-2 win over Burnley, which resulted in him being replaced by Joshua Zirkzee just past the half-hour mark.

Man United receive Cunha injury boost

Cunha was seen 'smiling and walking without aid' following the Premier League victory at Old Trafford, but the injury forced him to withdraw from Carlo Ancelotti's Brazil squad for two World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Bolivia, increasing the concern about the extent of his injury.

While he was unable to play for his country, there appears to be optimism at Man United that Cunha could make a swift recovery.

According to The Sun, there is a sense that Cunha's injury is not as bad as initially feared, raising hopes that he could feature in the upcoming Manchester derby.

The club are 'hopeful' that he will be part of the squad for next Sunday's clash with Man City at the Etihad Stadium.

Could Mount injury mean opportunity for Mainoo?

Like Cunha, Mason Mount was also forced off in the recent win over Burnley, making way at half time for academy product Kobbie Mainoo.

The Sun report claims that Mainoo could make his first Premier League start of the season next weekend if Mount is unable to prove his fitness.

The 20-year-old was keen to leave Man United on loan in the latter stages of the summer transfer window after falling down the pecking order in Ruben Amorim's squad.

However, he could now get the opportunity to show his head coach that he deserves to be a regular starter in the Man United side.
