LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) -Holiday shopping season brings concerns about package security for many families expecting deliveries.

Amazon spokesperson Jesse Garcia says stolen packages represent more than just missing items; they're carefully selected holiday gifts meant for loved ones.

Garcia emphasizes that package security starts with recognizing legitimate delivery personnel.

"We want to let you know the difference between an imposter and a driver delivering on behalf of Amazon," Garcia said. "Number one they don't knock on the door or ask you to sign for a package unless it's been pre-requested by the customer."

Amazon provides several options to keep packages away from front porches where they're vulnerable to theft. Customers can redirect deliveries to pickup lockers, convenience stores, or select specific delivery dates when they'll be home.

For customers who prefer home delivery, Garcia suggests using technology to communicate with drivers about secure placement.

"If you have a ring camera, it's a great tool to have because you can have a 2-way conversation with the driver that's delivering on behalf of Amazon," he said. "You can have that conversation with them and say hey can you put that under the stairs or behind that planter or behind that gate."

Garcia recommends developing a delivery strategy before packages arrive. This includes asking neighbors to collect deliveries, using the Amazon app to track packages in real-time, and checking for delivery confirmation photos.

He also notes that package security benefits both customers and delivery drivers, especially as daylight hours decrease during winter months.

"Leave the light on, we have drivers that are delivering on behalf of Amazon that are going to be delivering as the days get shorter having that light on helps them navigate those dark corners around your house to deliver that package," Garcia said.

When theft does occur, Garcia advises contacting both police and Amazon customer service. Reporting incidents helps identify patterns and may prevent other neighborhood residents from becoming victims.

The combination of alternative delivery options, communication with drivers, and community awareness can help ensure holiday packages reach their intended recipients safely.
