The Broncos defeated the Colts, 31-13, on Sunday at Empower Field in Week 15 of the NFL season.
Here are three takeaways from the home victory.
Nix uneven
Rookie QB Bo Nix threw an NFL career-worst three interceptions. It started on the opening drive when his first-down pass intended for WR Lil'Jordan Humphrey went directly to Colts LB Zaire Franklin dropping in zone coverage. It was more of the same after halftime. Nix overthrew WR Courtland Sutton for a pick to Colts CB Samuel Womack. Nix tossed his third interception in the third quarter when another deep ball for Sutton sailed high to Colts S Nick Cross. Nix redeemed himself with fourth-quarter touchdown passes to TE Nate Adkins and Sutton. But Nix lacked consistency.
Leaky run D
Denver entered Sunday with the No. 6 rushing defense in the NFL allowing 94.7 yards per game. Indianapolis eclipsed that total by halftime. The Broncos struggled to contain RB Jonathan Taylor and QB Anthony Richardson. They lucked out in the third quarter when Taylor celebrated too quickly on a would-be long touchdown run. Taylor dropped the football before the goal line, and it went through the end zone for a touchback. But Denver stiffened up with five turnovers -- including OLB Nik Bonitto's 50-yard fumble recovery touchdown -- to put the Colts away late.
Playoff picture
The Broncos (9-5) need just one victory over their final three games -- at Chargers, at Bengals, vs. Chiefs -- to clinch a spot in the NFL playoffs. Denver also moved into the No. 6 seed ahead of LA after the Chargers (8-6) fell on Sunday at the Buccaneers. The Broncos last made the postseason in 2015 when they won the Super Bowl. Their ugly win on Sunday put them one step closer to making their playoff dreams a reality again. Meanwhile, the Colts loss gives them just a 9% chance to make the postseason. The Broncos travel to face the Chargers in Week 16 on Thursday Night Football.
