The New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs bridged the gap.

After days of discussing a trade for first baseman/outfielder Cody Bellinger without resolution, the two sides reached agreement Tuesday on a swap that sends Bellinger to the Bronx, according to multiple reports. Jeff Passan of ESPN.com was the first to report the trade.

According to multiple reports, pitcher Cody Poteet and $5 million will go to Chicago in return for the 2019 National League Most Valuable Player.

On Sunday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported there is "still a gap" in the discussions between the Cubs and Yankees around who will assume the final year(s) of Bellinger's contract in a trade.

Bellinger, 29, slashed .266/.325/.426 with 18 homers and 78 RBIs in 2024. He was unwilling to test the free agent market this winter and instead opted into the second year of a three-year, $80 million contract that pays him $27.5 million in 2025.

If Bellinger opts into the third year of the deal, he will be owed $25 million in 2026.

Bellinger is one year removed from a Silver Slugger award-winning season with the Cubs, who signed him to a 1-year contract after the Los Angeles Dodgers non-tendered him following six years in Los Angeles.

Bellinger batted .307 with 26 home runs and 97 RBIs in his first season in Chicago, garnering downballot MVP votes.

In 2019, Bellinger claimed the MVP award on the strength of a 47-homer, 115-RBI season in which he batted .305 and excelled at three positions for the NL champion Dodgers.

A fourth-round draft pick out of high school in 2013, Bellinger was the NL Rookie of the Year in 2017, when he hit 39 home runs and drove in 97.

Bellinger is the son of former Yankees infielder Clay Bellinger.
