Google has rolled out two significant security upgrades to its Messages app: Safer links,a scam link blocker, and key Verifier, a tool for verifying contact identities. these features aim to protect users from phishing attacks, malware, and impersonation scams.
The "Safer links" feature proactively detects and blocks perhaps malicious links sent via SMS. When a message containing a suspected scam link is received, Google Messages displays a prominent pop-up warning stating, "Link Blocked. This message was flagged as likely spam." This prevents users from inadvertently clicking on harmful URLs that could lead to malware installation or identity theft.
Users retain control; they can dismiss the warning to return to the conversation. A "Not spam" option is also provided, allowing users to unlock the link if they believe the message was incorrectly flagged.Google states that scam link blocking is now universally available to all Google Messages users worldwide.
This feature leverages Google's existing threat intelligence and machine learning capabilities to identify and block known malicious links. The system continuously learns and adapts to new scam tactics, improving its effectiveness over time.
