Greetings from "Can't Wait For Saturday," your morning morsel of college football, courtesy of longtime Illini beat writer, AP Top 25 voter and Heisman state rep Bob Asmussen. He'll give you his views each day on the game he loves

Let me be brief and to the point: Brian Kelly wasn't the last highly-paid coach who is going to get shown the door. Just like James Franklin wasn't either.
For good or bad -- mostly bad -- the NIU rules and transfer portal and 12-team playoff have given athletic departments the attention span of a a gnat. Thought I am gar from a biology wiz, I assume that would be extremely short.
LSU felt pressure to end the Kelly era because he was clearly not leading the team to the CFP any time soon. At a place that has won three national titles with three different coaches since 2003 (not Kelly) that simply won't do.
Credit the agents of coaches who get huge buyouts for their clients as they should. And point some blame at fan bases and boosters who want to win rightnow.
No time to build. Just lure the best players with cash and win right away. Or else.
There should be a better, less-wasteful way of doing business, but there isn't.
It doesn't make me enjoy the actual games any less, but does temper my enthusiasm for some of the shenanigans that surround it.
Kelly and Franklin, ousted earlier by Penn State, will be fine. But I am pretty sure they would rather earn their money on the field.
